Door Locks & Deadbolts

About Door Locks & Deadbolts

Door Locks & Deadbolts is the security-focused part of the door hardware range. Traditional options include Kwikset entry knobs and levers with SmartKey rekeying, Probrico and Plustool privacy knobs in multi-packs, keyed-alike entry and deadbolt combos and passage sets. Smart locks are a large group: fingerprint models from TEEHO and Evanshow, the SwitchBot Lock Ultra, MYPIN smart knobs, Aqara and ULTRALOQ locks, plus a Veise Wi-Fi gateway. Van puck locks, lockout covers and reinforcement latches are also listed.

Start with how the door is used. Exterior doors benefit from a deadbolt with a full 1-inch throw paired with a keyed knob or lever; interior doors need only privacy or passage function. Look at ANSI/BHMA grade as a guide to durability. Rekeyable cylinders like Kwikset SmartKey let you change keys after moving in without replacing the lock. For smart locks, choose an unlock method you will use, whether fingerprint, keypad, phone app or key, and check how it connects: built-in Wi-Fi works directly, while Bluetooth models often need a gateway for remote access. Auto-lock timers and access logs suit rentals and busy households.

A lock is only as strong as its strike. Replacing short strike plate screws with screws long enough to reach the wall stud makes a door far harder to kick in. In cold weather, batteries drain faster and fingerprint readers struggle with dry or gloved hands, so keep a key or keypad backup. Lubricate cylinders with graphite or a dry lubricant before winter.

Frequently asked questions

Does a smart lock replace my deadbolt?

Many smart locks replace the deadbolt entirely, including the exterior keypad or fingerprint reader and interior motorized thumb-turn. Others, such as retrofit models, keep your existing exterior cylinder and replace only the interior side. Handle-style smart locks combine the latch and lock in one unit. Check the listed door thickness, bore size and backset before ordering.

What is SmartKey rekeying?

SmartKey is Kwikset's rekeyable cylinder system. With the current working key and a small tool, you can reset the lock to accept a different key in under a minute, without removing it from the door. It is handy after moving into a new home or when you want several locks to share one key.

Do I need a Wi-Fi gateway for my smart lock?

It depends on the lock. Models with built-in Wi-Fi connect directly to your router, allowing remote access and alerts. Bluetooth-only locks work from your phone when you are nearby, and a separate gateway or bridge adds remote control. Locks using Matter or Zigbee usually rely on a compatible hub or controller in the home.

How can I make my front door lock more secure?

Install a deadbolt with a 1-inch throw, then reinforce the strike plate with screws long enough to reach the framing behind the jamb. A reinforced strike or door jamb kit spreads the force of a kick. Make sure the bolt fully extends into the strike; if it binds, adjust the strike rather than leaving the bolt partly thrown.
