Door Hardware & Locks

About Door Hardware & Locks

Door Hardware & Locks covers the full door, not just the lock. Interior privacy knobs from Probrico and SORWDUERM, Kwikset entry knobs with SmartKey rekeying, keyed-alike knob and deadbolt combos, glass privacy knobs and lever sets sit with smart locks from Aqara and ULTRALOQ, keypad knobs and fingerprint models. Supporting hardware includes 3.5-inch door hinges in bulk packs, automatic and storm door closers, strike plate silencers, storefront mortise locks and self-adhesive floor transition strips.

Decide on the function first: passage (no lock) for hallways and closets, privacy (push-button) for bathrooms and bedrooms, entry (keyed) for exterior doors, and deadbolts for added security. Keyed-alike sets let one key open every exterior door. Lever handles must suit the door's swing, though most residential sets are reversible. For hinges, match size and corner shape, square or 1/4 or 5/8-inch radius, so they drop into existing mortises. Door closers are sized by door weight and width, so check the rated range, such as 90 to 140 lb. With smart locks, confirm the ecosystem, such as Apple Home, Matter or Alexa.

Measure the door thickness, backset and bore before ordering; most residential doors use a 54 mm bore and 60 or 70 mm backset, while commercial aluminum storefront doors use narrow-backset mortise hardware. Storm door closers may need their tension adjusted between seasons, since cold makes hydraulic fluid stiffer. Exterior smart locks should keep a key or keypad backup for when batteries fade in winter.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between passage, privacy and entry door knobs?

Passage knobs latch the door but never lock, suited to hallways and closets. Privacy knobs lock from the inside with a push button or turn, and can be opened from outside with a small emergency tool, making them right for bathrooms and bedrooms. Entry knobs lock with a key from outside and are used on exterior and garage doors.

How do I know which door hinges to buy?

Remove one hinge and measure its height and width, commonly 3.5 x 3.5 inches on interior doors. Check the corners: square corners, 1/4-inch radius or 5/8-inch radius must match the mortise cut in the door and frame. Also match the screw hole pattern and finish. Heavier exterior doors typically use larger 4-inch hinges.

What does keyed alike mean?

Keyed-alike locks are made so that one key operates all of them. Buying a keyed-alike knob and deadbolt set, or several entry sets with matching keys, lets you open the front, back and garage entry doors with a single key. Some locks, such as Kwikset SmartKey models, can also be rekeyed at home to match an existing key.

Why does my door closer slam or close too slowly?

Most hydraulic closers have adjustment screws for sweep speed and latch speed. Turning them a small amount, an eighth of a turn at a time, changes how fast the door swings and how firmly it latches. In cold weather the fluid thickens and the door closes more slowly, so seasonal tweaks are normal for storm and exterior doors.
