About HVAC

The HVAC collection focuses on moving, filtering and holding onto heated or cooled air. It includes pleated and washable REAIR furnace filters, Aprilaire-compatible media filters, Honeywell and White-Rodgers thermostats, register booster fans, floor registers and air diverters for ceiling diffusers. Venting parts from DuraVent, such as insulated double-wall pellet elbows and stainless wall thimbles, sit next to furnace pressure switches, Mr. Heater ignition boards and fuel filters, reflective duct wrap, window insulation film and garage door bottom seals.

Start with the fuel and system type, because many parts are model-specific. A furnace pressure switch or ignition board must match the listed part number or the appliance family it replaces. Venting components are only compatible within one maker's system, so a DuraVent PelletVent elbow joins only that pipe series and diameter. Thermostat choice depends on wiring: heat-only, heat and cool, multi-stage or heat pump, and whether a C-wire is present for a smart model. For airflow problems, a register booster fan or diverter can help a cold room, but check for closed dampers and blocked cold-air intakes before adding equipment.

Venting for pellet stoves and gas appliances is a fire and carbon monoxide safety matter, so follow the appliance and vent manufacturer's clearances and have a qualified installer confirm the work. Keep CO alarms near sleeping areas. Window film and door seals are inexpensive ways to cut drafts before a Canadian winter, and they go on most reliably on a dry day above freezing.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a C-wire for a smart thermostat?

Most Wi-Fi thermostats need constant 24 V power, supplied by a common or C-wire from the furnace control board. Some models offer a power-stealing workaround or include an adapter kit. Remove your current thermostat's cover and check whether a wire is attached to a C terminal; if not, look in the furnace for a spare conductor in the same cable.

Can I mix venting pipe brands for a pellet stove?

No. Pellet and gas vent systems are tested and listed as complete systems, and connections between brands are generally not permitted unless the manufacturer supplies a listed adapter. Mixing components can create leaks of exhaust gases. Use pipe, elbows, thimbles and caps from the same series and diameter, and follow the clearance-to-combustibles figures in the installation manual.

Will a register booster fan fix a cold room?

It can help when a room sits at the end of a long duct run and receives weak airflow. Before installing one, open any closed dampers, check that furniture is not blocking supply registers or cold-air grilles and confirm the furnace filter is not clogged. A booster with its own thermostat runs only when the furnace blows warm air.

What does a furnace pressure switch do?

The pressure switch confirms that the draft inducer motor is creating enough suction to vent combustion gases before the burners light. If it does not close, the furnace will not ignite and usually shows an error code. A failed switch is one cause, but blocked vent pipes, cracked hoses and condensate problems trigger the same fault, so check those first.
