About Hardware

Hardware is HandySkook's broadest category, the place for everything that opens, closes, hangs or holds. It covers keyed and smart door locks from Aqara, ULTRALOQ and eufy, keypad knobs, privacy bathroom locks with vacant/occupied indicators, Baldwin lever conversion kits, bifold door track kits and patio door handle sets. Ravinte drawer handles, knob backplates, cast iron shelf brackets, coat hooks, toilet paper holders, wall-mount mailboxes, leveller feet, LiftMaster-compatible transmitters and sealants round out the mix.

Because the range is so wide, start by measuring rather than browsing. Door hardware depends on door thickness, backset (usually 60 or 70 mm) and bore size; cabinet pulls are sold by hole-centre spacing, such as 96 mm or 128 mm. For shelf brackets, compare the rated load per pair and the depth against your shelf. With smart locks, decide which ecosystem you use, whether Apple Home, Matter, Google Home or Alexa, and whether you want fingerprint, keypad or app access. Finish is the last decision: matte black, satin nickel, brushed brass and champagne bronze rarely match across brands.

Mount anything load-bearing into studs or with anchors rated for the weight, not into bare drywall. Exterior lock batteries drain faster in deep cold, so models with low-battery alerts and a mechanical key backup make sense on Canadian front doors. Silicone and sealant cure slowly below about 5 degrees Celsius, so plan outdoor sealing for milder days.

Frequently asked questions

What is door backset and why does it matter?

Backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the centre of the bore hole for the knob or lever. Most residential doors use 60 mm (2-3/8 in.) or 70 mm (2-3/4 in.). Many locksets come with an adjustable latch that fits both, but commercial mortise locks and some storefront hardware use different backsets, so measure before replacing.

Will a smart lock fit my existing deadbolt hole?

Most residential smart locks are made for standard 54 mm (2-1/8 in.) bore holes and doors about 35 to 45 mm thick. Check the lock's listed door thickness range and backset, and confirm there is room around the interior unit for the battery housing. Doors with glass panels or narrow stiles may need a different style of lock.

How do I choose the right cabinet pull size?

Measure the distance between the existing screw holes, centre to centre; common sizes are 76 mm, 96 mm and 128 mm. If drilling fresh, many people pick a pull roughly one-third the width of the drawer front. Knobs need just one hole, while long pulls on wide drawers spread the load and look proportional.

What does ANSI Grade mean on a door lock?

ANSI/BHMA grades rate a lock's durability and strength through cycle and force tests. Grade 1 is the most rigorous, generally used in commercial settings; Grade 2 suits heavy residential or light commercial use; Grade 3 covers standard residential doors such as interior bedrooms. The grade appears on product packaging when the lock has been tested.
