Wood End Sealer Guide: Stop Green Wood From Cracking

Wood End Sealer Guide: Stop Green Wood From Cracking

Key takeaways

  • Green (fresh-cut) wood loses moisture fastest through the end grain, which causes checking and cracking.
  • End-grain sealer (a wax emulsion like AnchorSeal) slows that moisture loss so the wood dries evenly.
  • Apply a heavy coat to the end grain within hours of cutting for best results.
  • It is used by sawyers, woodturners, bowl blank sellers and anyone air-drying lumber.

Why green wood cracks

Freshly cut wood is full of moisture. As it dries, it shrinks — but the open end grain releases moisture far faster than the sides. That uneven drying creates stress that splits the wood into radial cracks called checks. Bowl blanks, slabs, logs and turning stock are especially prone to it.

How end-grain sealer works

An end-grain sealer is a wax emulsion you brush onto the cut ends. It forms a flexible barrier that slows moisture loss through the end grain so the whole piece dries at a more even rate. AnchorSeal is the best-known brand, but any green-wood end sealer works on the same principle.

How to apply it

  • Apply as soon as possible after cutting — ideally the same day, while the wood is still wet.
  • Brush a thick, even coat over the entire end grain (and a couple of centimetres onto the sides).
  • For valuable slabs or bowl blanks, apply a second coat once the first is tacky.
  • Store the sealed wood out of direct sun and wind, with airflow around it.

Who needs it

Sawmills and sawyers, woodturners and carvers, slab and live-edge sellers, firewood-to-lumber hobbyists, and anyone air-drying their own boards. A pail goes a long way and dramatically cuts drying losses.

Frequently asked questions

What is AnchorSeal?

AnchorSeal is a wax-emulsion end-grain sealer applied to fresh-cut wood to slow moisture loss and prevent end checking and cracking as the wood dries.

When should I apply end sealer?

As soon as possible after cutting — ideally the same day, while the end grain is still wet. The sooner you seal, the less checking you'll get.
