If you have ever stripped a screw on a Japanese motorcycle, camera or fishing reel with a standard Phillips screwdriver, the problem may not have been you. Many Japanese manufacturers use JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) cross-head screws, which look like Phillips but have a different recess geometry. A Phillips tip tends to ride up and cam out of a JIS screw. A JIS driver seats fully.

Tang-through construction

The steel shaft runs right through the handle to a metal cap at the end. That means you can tap the back of the driver with a hammer to shock a seized or rusted screw loose, which is often what it takes on old motorcycle engine covers and carburetor screws, without cracking the handle. Regular screwdrivers are not built for that.

Handling

The tips are magnetized to hold screws while you start them, which helps with small fasteners on cameras and electronics. Handles are soft polymer for a comfortable, controlled grip.

Where JIS drivers earn their keep

Cars, motorcycles, bicycles, cameras, fishing reels, printers and photocopiers from Japanese brands. The drivers also fit standard Phillips screws, so they can serve as everyday cross-head drivers too.

Tip: JIS screws are often marked with a small dot or dimple on the head. Seeing one is a good sign to reach for these instead of a Phillips driver.
